New Year…Resolution/Revolution?

Happy new year!
2015 was quite a year for me. How was it for you? One thing for sure, time flies. I thought I was the only one thinking 2015 went by real fast, but apparently, everyone has been telling me they feel exactly the same!

And now here we are, January 2016. That time of the year where you come up with ideals, plans, and resolutions. Like I did. Half of them probably ending up unticked by the end of the year, anyway. Eating healthier, exercising more, studying more, spending less…and the list goes on. What about you? What does your 2K16’s resolution look like?

Amidst of all the planning and coming up with a resolution, these verses came to me. Not to say that they never did, cause this is definitely not my (and I’m sure your) first time reading it. Just that it came in such a moment of drafting and planning and and and…

“Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.””

‭‭James‬ ‭4:13-15‬ ‭NIV‬

And I am once again reminded of how carried away we can get with planning at times. Not that we can’t plan, cause we’re even told to (read Luke 14:28). But what are our plans all about? Good plans can still be bad ones when planned without God. Mine’s got “me” written all over it. And it’s time for a change.

I used to think “Oh, well. I was selfish and I didn’t include God in my previous resolution. This time I will”. Sounds good, right?

No. I thought I got it right, but I didn’t.

What do you mean “include God”? By “including God”, we are indirectly putting Him in a box, and then putting that box somewhere in our list of plans. “Including God” translates into having plans so “big” that all the place He’s got is simply being included in it.

That’s when He gently rebuked me. Your plans can’t INCLUDE God. He’s too big for you to “include”. Instead, are your plans in line with His will? Your plans have to revolve around Him. Better said, you ARE the part of His plans. You are the inclusion. It’s not downplaying your life. In fact, it reminds us of the privilege we are given, to even get to play a part in His big plans.

I don’t wanna start 2016 with the same old self-absorbed me, busy asking myself what plans to make. Not gonna start with another resolution. It’s time for a revolution. This year, let’s start by asking Him what plans He wants us to have instead!
